SheVaCon
This was a small Con this past weekend in Roanoke, Va. , as far as
small Cons go, this was damned near perfect. SheVaCon had the
typical things I wish enjoy at a con. Enjoy Gaming, Costumes, a
damned good art room, a dealer room, a LARP, authors, good con suite,
and drumming!
The Gaming at SheVaCon was good. They were too numerous to name,
but all seemed to have had a great time. Dice rolled and people
laughed. This was damned good gaming in my view.
The Costuming was a bit meager this past SheVaCon. The few
costumes I saw were nice. Many beginner costumers made themselves
known. People ahve to start some place and this was a damned good
Con for it.
Allen Wold was at the Con. Allen ahs the look of a older, grey
haired wizard. he enjoyed his fans and spoke to his admirers with
great care.I have met this man several times and he never remembers
me. I enjoyed his writings in the past. Tony Ruggiero was there as
well, he gave a panel on vampires. This is one author I regonize on
sight and he knows me. He saw me as I entered the hotel and was
polite. These intimate small Cons is a perfect setting for authors
like this. The get to meet the people who read their works. There
were several readings in the Con Suite.
The art Room was fantastic. By nature, I am visually stimulated.
The one thing I hate about ConCarolinas is the lack of a good art
room. SheVaCon did not skimp here. They have my highest respects
for the art room.
The Dealer room was small but select. The dealers were busy, but
not over run with customers. They all seemed to ahve made money.
There were no obvious dealer complaints and they ALL had smiles on
their faces. There should be deals in the Dealer's Room. There is
nothing I dislike more in a dealer's Room than poaying full price
for the same items I can get at the store. What would be the point?
There was Live Action Role Playing game at the Con and the players
had a Great time. There was very little drama in the game on behalf
of the players. One of my SCA buddys ran the LARP with her team of
Judges. The LARP was Cthulu meets Vampire: The Masquerade. They
had well over 40 players enjoying this game. The players were in age
form 11 years old to over 50 years of age. The combat was minimal,
but the role play was immense. many of the players wore costumes for
this game. the Costumes were not the best, but the players did their
best and had fun at it. This game ran all hours of the Con. It
officially stopped 10 am on sunday morning.
The Con Suite was comparable to that of StelalrCon. The Con Suite
ran all friday and saturday night of the Con without closing. The
Staff of SheVaCon spent money on this Con Suite. The Con Suite Staff
maintained and Jar for donations. This Jar was full with dollars and
silver coinage. They had hot food. not just sanswhich meat and
peanut butter. This was a class act on a budget. the sado was all
poured from bottles, but the bottles were kept on ice. My hat is off
to this Con Suite.
ShevaCon has the best drumming of any Con. Period. Better than
DragonCon, that is saying allot in my view. They had a Djembe
drummer come to this Con with over a dozen drums for his students.
He taught African beats and people learned quickly. The drumming
stared at 11pm sharp both nights. Ok, It helps when Achbar is the
drumming Co Ordinator for the Con's drum circle. Wayne, thanks allot for asking me to do this. I have a better idea for next year if I am allowed to do this again. hell, even if I am not allowed, I wil come anyway ( smile)! Most of the
drummers brought their own drums. the Con set a room aside for this
activity. The drumming lasted well until 3am in the morning both
nights. I admire a Convention that allows this kind of planning for
drumming. There were members form the new band called DragonBane
playing in the drum circle. it is alwasy great to hear the sound of
Guitar played in drumming circles. In as much as i love drumming, it
is grat to hear different instruments played and loved./
The SCA was welcomed with open arms at this Convention. They ahd
two different Medieval organizations giving demonstrations. There
was rapier fighting at this Con. Unfortuantely for me, there was no
SCA heavy fighting. That was somehting i really looked forward to
doing at the Con. People enjoyed the SCA demo and they stayed
behind and asked many good questions. the barony of Black Diamond
held the demo. There was a dedicated market plan to get the SCA to
attend this Convention. One could not toss a brink and not hit a
member of the SCA at this convention. it was my hope to see this
sort of marketting done here in NC. As of yet, I have not seen any
Con in this are market their Con to the SCA. DragonCon does a GREAT
job of this. It is sad that many Con Organizers forget that the SCA
is full of Sci fi fans. This is an over sight I can never understand.
In Summary, I hope to attend ShEvACon next year. While this is a
small Convention of only about 500 plus people, I feel that is is
well worth the 3 hours of driving to attend it. this Con has all of
the things that is worth my attention, gaming, a fantastic Art Room,
a Good Dealer'sRoom, a Great Con Suite, a better than decent LARP,
wonderful Authors, decent Costuming and Wonderful Drumming! This
year's SheVaCon will leave a positive and lasting memory in my heart.

From News.com http://news.com.com/2061-10802_3-6142354.html

Word comes from Burbank, Calif., that passionate fans of the Joss
Whedon TV show Firefly from all over the world have ponied up money to
help pay to carry off "Flanvention," the fan convention that was
scheduled to begin Friday but was abruptly canceled Thursday.

According to Corey Bridges, the executive producer at Multiverse
Network, who was in town for Flanvention, people had come to Burbank
from all over the place, only to find when they arrived that the event
had had the rug pulled out from under it.

But never to be told they can't have what they want, the show's fans,
known as "browncoats," scrambled and found a way to make it work.

"It's a remarkable thing," said Bridges, who explained that the local
browncoats had found a way to get fans from all over the place to help
fund the replacement event. "To me it's the symbolism of this group of
people, the browncoats. They've done this before, having something
they're deeply passionate about canceled prematurely and having it
resurrected."

Indeed, the browncoats are famous for their response to the
cancellation of Firefly and the way they've managed to get showings
all over the world of Serenity, the film based on the TV show.

And it's not only the fans who showed up despite the cancellation.
Many of the show's actors appeared, despite not getting paid to do so.
Bridges said actor Nathan Fillion had arrived and was giving away
memorabilia from his time on the show to fans.

Anyway, Bridges said that there had been some scuttlebutt in the days
leading up to Flanvention that there was trouble brewing. Thus, the
local browncoats had begun to come up with backup plans. But at that
point, they were told all was well, only to find on Thursday that all
was most definitely not.

Flash-forward to Saturday where, absent the hotel ballroom the event
was supposed to be held in, the browncoats were organizing replacement
events at a "secret" location, Bridges said, and a series of
color-coded buses meant to ferry the fans there was arriving.

"Now this is essentially happening for free," said Bridges, "for
everyone who shows up. Because we don't have the list of attendees
from the organizers."

Hello all, since so many of us drink beer at events and actually care about how bad things are getting in this country I thought I would bring to your attention a way you can help just be switching to a different beer for a while. You may find you like something you passed by before in the process.

Anyway, here is a letter I have been asked to forward to people and groups I know that drink beer.

By the way, one reason this is so important is the vast amount of damage done to this society every day by illegal aliens, for example between 50 and 60 americans are killed daily by illegal aliens according to statistics compiled by the FIRE coalition, yet these facts go unreported because the big money doesn't want everyday citizens to wake up and see what is happening around us.

The letter:

I am sending this e-mail to ask you to join the national American boycott
against Miller Brewing Company and their parent company SABMiller based in London.

Miller Brewing Company is giving tens of thousands of dollars to groups that
support illegal immigration, benefits for illegal aliens, and amnesty.

The boycott message is clear. Dump the beer! Dump SABMiller's stock!

The main products we are targeting are Miller Lite, ICE House, Milwaukee's
Best, and Fosters. A complete list of Miller Brewing Company's Products,
instructions for the boycott, and the latest news can be found at www.MillerBoycott.com

Please help support the Boycott by taking the following actions.

1. Please visit www.MillerBoycott.com to learn how you can support the boycott.
2. Please sign the boycott petition.
3. Write to your favorite organizations, if they are not already on the
coalition list, and ask them to join the National Illegal Immigration Boycott
Coalition.
4. Please forward this message to all of your contacts asking them to do the
same.

We are tired of huge companies like Miller Brewing Company using the money we
give them as consumers to turn around and support illegal immigration, amnesty,
and benefits.

It's time to take a stand and time to send Miller Brewing Company a clear
message.

Sep 1-4, 2006

Hi,

I created this new tribe because it seemed like a good place to allow discussion that didn't quite have a home in the faire, history, SCA or conventions tribes. The magical part is in the fact that we recreate pieces of history as if by magic.

So I am making this a thread posting because it seems the new format of the tribe cards makes it so that most people never see the listings.

http://tribes.tribe.net/magicalhistorytour

Whether your events and reenactments include magical influences or not, when an event really comes together and people forget that they are in the modern world for a while and immerse themselves in the experience, the event comes alive and the atmosphere is magical and full of possibilities and romance. That time, no matter how brief, is what so many live for, whether it is for themselves or to feel the power of helping others experience it.

This is a tribe for discussion of all aspects of historic re-enactment and re-creation as well as recreation. This includes medieval festivals, viking festivals, renaissance faires, pirates, buckskinner events, etc.

Historic fiction and fantasy are welcome as well.
